By Lynnell Eash, Bronson Library Manager
2006 was a great year at your library and we wish to thank all the many who have helped make this possible including the City of Bronson, Bronson Township, the many businesses and organizations and all the folks that have given us their support and encouragement. We will work hard to make 2007 another banner year.
"Saddle up and read, Bookaroo!" This is the theme of the Bronson Library Winter Reading Club for children up through kindergarten. Winter can be a hard time for these little tots when older brothers and sisters are in school all day and it's too cold to play outside. This is a great time to get Mom, Dad, grandparents and any other caregiver to curl up with a stack of books and read to the children. The club starts Thursday January 11th. Just come to the library, sign-up and start reading and listening.
We will have preschool story time starting again in February and any books read there will also count towards the club. Call 369-3785 for more information.
There will be a Friends of the Bronson Library Meeting on January 16th at 5:00. Please come and join us and learn more about our plans and progress with the handicapped access renovation. We welcome and seek any and all ideas and suggestions. Help us make this project a reality!
The American Girl Club will be meeting January 19th from 3:30- 4:30. Please note the time change. We will be talking about Kit and the Depression years. This club is for ages 8-12. Please register to attend.
Mark your calendars for January 26th, a no school day. We will be showing the movie "Barnyard" here at the library. The show will be from 2:00-3:45. There will be popcorn and drinks provided.
Look for upcoming events and programs each week in this column in the Bronson Journal or on the Internet.

March is coming quickly and will be a busy month. Remember that March is Reading Month and last year we challenged the community to read 100,000 pages. You ended up reading that many pages and went way beyond so with that and our huge increase in circulation, the challenge is raised to 250,000 pages. Can we do it? Starting March 1st, anything you read during the month of March, just count the pages and you can either turn them in weekly or in one lump sum at the end of the month. You may e-mail numbers, mail them to us, call us or stop by. This includes magazines, newspapers, books, whatever you read. It seems like a huge number but if we all work together we can do it!
We are also participating in the “One Book One County” program again this year. The book we are reading is Julie Alvarez's "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents." Copies are still available at the library. Our first discussion group will be March 7th at 6:00PM. Come join us.

It is a chance for you to get out of the house and just concentrate on scrapbooking. This program will run through May.

During” March is Reading Month,” We challenged the community to read 250,000 pages. We ended the month with 236,578 pages read.. Everyone did a great job!
A small group gathered last Thursday for the One Book, One County grand finale. A big thank you to Fine and Fancy's Park Place for serving several Caribbean dishes including Pollo Loco and Sun Rice. We also enjoyed the mango and papaya smoothies. Thank you to those who took the time to participate in this years program.
As we've said in the past, we have reference questions come to us several times a week and sometimes we have a struggle finding the answer. Two recycling questions came in recently and the reference room at Coldwater hasn't been able to come up with an answer either, so I'm asking all our readers and patrons. Locally, where can a person go to recycle glass and styrofoam? If there isn't a recycle station for styrofoam how does a person dispose of it? If you know the answer to these, please give us a call at the library at 517 369 3785 or e-mail us.
Just a reminder, The Friends of the Bronson Library will be attending the group session with all the Friends groups of the Branch Library District. The meeting will be at the Main library in Coldwater at 5:30, Tuesday, April 17th. The Bronson group will meet at the Bronson Library at 5:00 PM and will carpool to Coldwater after a very short meeting to elect officers. Lets all make this a great turnout from Bronson.

Craft time will be held on Thursdays starting June 21st from 11:00 -12:30. Children younger than six should have a parent or older sibling stay to help them, but all ages are welcome.
The Friends of the Bronson Library wish to thank the Bronson Rotary Club for their generous gift to our building fund. We must also thank the many other supporters, especially the little tots who stand on a stool to drop their pennies in our donation jug. Every tiny bit brings us closer to our goal. The Friends will hold their next meeting at 5:00 PM, Tuesday June 19th at the library. Please stop in and learn more about our projects.

What a wonderful busy summer the library has had so far! All of our summer programs were a huge success, circulation is up, attendance is up and computer use is up, up, up. Many people stopping by to use the computers last week were surprised to find a one and a half to two hour waiting list, but everyone was very patient and cooperative and we thank them.
A big thank you to our Friends of the Bronson Library and all the volunteers who helped setup, run and tear down the book sale during the U.S. 12 Garage Sales. It was a long day but the Friends group were very pleased with the turn out. If you are still looking for used books be sure to stop by the library and check out the book sale in the basement and inside the front door.
The Friends of the Bronson Library are continuing to raise money to put an elevator in the library to make it handicapped accessible. Every week we see people of all ages struggle to make it up the stairs into the library and would love to make it easier for them to come here. Long time librarian Carole Maddox told me last week she won't be able to come into the library anymore because her knees just won't let her climb all those steps. After 33 years of dedicated service, a strong love for books and this old Carnegie building, she won't get to visit inside for a while. Hang in there Carole we are working on it!
The fall program schedules will be available September 1st.

As we mentioned last week, our computers were very busy during the month of August and when the final count was tallied, we found that the public computers were used 900 times during the month! Our attendance was up 628 over last year but surprisingly our circulation for August was down 218. Stephanie and I both thought the circulation had to be up as we checked out so many items and Jan Lehman, who volunteers to shelf books, probably thought so too, as the return cart seemed to refill itself automatically.

Over the past few months we have had several children's dvds stolen right out of their cases here in the library. A couple weeks a ago a wonderful 8 year old girl by the name of Sunny Smith came to us and said she owns a copy of Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper and wondered if she could donate it to the library to replace the one stolen. She said she doesn't watch it a lot anymore but if she decides she wants to see it again she will be able to check it out at the library. We thank Sunny for her generous spirit and are happy to have this movie on our shelves again to offer to our young patrons.

It was a fun and festive time last week here at the Bronson Library. We held three Christmas parties starting with the Friday Tales Preschoolers. As the children arrived they were given a Santa face to put cotton balls on to give him a nice full beard. Next the children decorated the Christmas tree and checked out all the automated Santas. We read Christmas stories and practiced our Ho Ho Hos. Tina Scott furnished Christmas cookies and a couple children brought candy canes and Christmas tattoos to share with everyone.
In the afternoon the Teen Club gathered and played games which included "Toss the Christmas Card", "Draw a Picture on Your Head", "Create a Christmas Tree Behind Your Back" and a trivia game. Refreshments were served and a white elephant gift exchange was held.
Saturday the Bronson American Girl Club and the Sherwood American Girl Club met at the Wing House Museum for a tour and a Christmas Tea. There were seventeen children, mothers and grandmothers attending the tea party. We had a wonderful tour through the house and enjoyed seeing the special trees decorated in each room. The children each had their picture taken in front of the big big tree with its 2100 lights and 250 ornaments. Everyone made it back home before the snowstorm hit.
Stephanie and Lynnell wish a very Merry Christmas to our patrons and a special thank you to all the Friends of the Bronson Library.

LIBRARY RECEIVES $2,000 GRANT
The Friends of the Bronson Library were the recent recipients of a $2,000 grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation to be used as part of the Library’s Barrier-Free Accessibility Project. Although circulation and library use has increased over the past year, taking away the barriers for those who have a hard time with steps will increase library usage.
Our Bronson Library building is a historical Carnegie Library, one of a very few in this country that is still being used as a library. Although it has served our community well over the past 90 plus years, it is unfortunate to report that there are many in our community that have trouble accessing the facility or can not even access it at all. One must climb 12 steps to get into the library. The Friends of the Library has concluded that to allow more people access to the Library Facilities it is time to find a way to make it barrier free.
We have contacted an architecture firm and received a drawing plus a cost estimate for making the facility barrier free. We are looking at a cost of about $225,000 to put in an elevator, a small addition to the southwest corner of the library, and two barrier free restrooms. To date we have only 42% of the funds needed to bring the project to completion.
The Consumers Energy Foundation was one of the many organizations the Friends have contacted in regards to funds to assist in this project. In 2008 the Friends will have several fund raising projects to help raise funds for the project. In the February/March time frame the Friends in conjunction with the United Methodist Church are going to have a Soup and Sandwich Supper with a Silent Auction. Other items being discussed are a Nelson Port a Pit BBQ Chicken and Pork Ribs dinner the day of the City Wide Garage Sale. A Car Show sometime in Late Spring/Early Summer.

The money from this raffle will come to the library to help buy books. Congratulations Robin and thank you to the Women's Club for all their fund raising efforts.
Reminder that the library will be closed Tuesday January 1 for the New Year. We will open again on Wednesday January 2 at 10:30 a.m.
