It's been a great month at your library. Carole and Pat are walking on air. They have been busy all week storing files and equipment in the many new cabinets and drawers with a a place for everything and everything in it's place. Our patrons have all been pleased with the new look and everyone was amazed that the area looked much larger with the new layout. We owe our heartfelt thanks to the Branch District Library Board for funding the project, to our library Director for his hearty support and to our automation specialist for efforts above and beyond the call of duty. Your library staff will hold an open house at the Bronson Library on Tuesday, February 1st from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Please plan to attend and give us your comments and support. You can also view our remodelling page to see pictures and a video contrasting the state of things before and after.
Tax time is here! Our bank of public computers are now loaded with software programs that allow patrons to make official copies of Federal and Michigan State tax forms. Copies can be printed for 15 cents per copy. We also have some Michigan State tax forms available. There is not, however, software to E-file using our computers. See Carole or Pat for further details.
The Memorials to Noriene Ritter have been outstanding and the Friends of the Bronson Library are very appreciative for the kindness of her friends and family for being so generous to your library. The gifts and bequests of so many have helped keep your library alive and growing.

Michigan state tax forms are available at no charge while supply lasts. We are sorry, but patrons cannot E-file using our computers.
We are asking our patrons with cell phones to set their units in silent mode and to use their phones only in designated areas outside the main library room.

Pt has returned from her mission to Neuva Guinea, Nicaragua in Central America. During her trip she took many photos of the people and villages she encountered during her visit. The pictures vividly illustrate the living conditions that exist in the area. Her mission was to distribute shoes and clothing to the needy along with entertainment and church services. We laud Pat for her many good deeds and efforts. The photos of her trip are on display at the Bronson Public Library and we encourage everyone to stop in and view the great contrast of conditions there against those under which we live in Bronson.
The Bronson Alumni Club has donated a Bronson High School Yearbook to our library. We have many annuals from prior years but are in need of several volumes that have been lost over time. The yearbooks are part of our reference library and are not allowed to leave the building. If anyone wishes to donate any of the missing years, please call the library at 369-3785 for more information.
We appreciate the many folks who donate used books to our library. Many are added to our active catalog or are offered in the Friends of the Library annual book sales. Many of the better books have been given to the Veterans clubs for distribution to the V.A. hospitals. We prefer that the donors call and advise us of their gift. Some donations have been left outside the rear door of the library. This entrance is not normally used and some books have set there over the weekends when the library is closed and have been damaged by the weather. Again, we wish to thank all those donors and will continue to see that their gifts are wisely put to good use.
All library card holders in the Branch District Library System can search our catalog for available books or materials and order them on line. Simply log on and search for the title or author you require. Follow the directions. You will need your library card ID number from the back side of the card and your PIN number ( the last four digits of your ID number) to order your request. The item will be delivered to the branch library you request. If you need help or instructions, please call the Central branch at 278-2341.

Please call your library for more information.

New at your library:
The Upside Down Boy is a bilingual book, in Spanish and English, which tells the story of a young boy, Juanito, and his family who move to the USA from Mexico. Juanito feels totally out of place and his world feels upside down; a new home, a new language, a new school, new friends, etc. When reading this story, it is easy to identify with Juanito if we consider how we would feel if we were in his place. A good story for our young readers which may help them to empathize with our growing Hispanic population.

Overflow crowds attended the show's appearances at Algansee, Coldwater and Bronson libraries. 208 guests enjoyed the show at Bronson. Denise and Jack from the Binder Park Zoo kept the crowd enthralled as they presented their animal friends. The audience was introduced to a snapping tree frog, a screech owl with one eye, a kinkajou, a fox snake and a Madagascar hissing cockroach. The youngsters were allowed to hold and pet the animals as the show ended. Due to lack of space, some folks were turned away. We apologize to those who missed the event and we may try to schedule another program in the future for those who missed this showing and those who wish to see it again. Monday, May 16 was a special day here at the library. The 3rd and 4th grades from Ryan School came to pay us a visit and learn about our local library. Pat read them several chapters from The Fog Phantoms of Florida by Johnathan Rand. Many of the children were disappointed when she stopped but were encouraged to check out the book to find out what happened next. We are pleased to report that is exactly what has happened. There is now a waiting list for it. If anyone wants to check out the book, come to the library so we may add you to the list and get copies from the other libraries.
Carole told the children about some of the upcoming events that will be part of the Summer Reading Program. This years theme is "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds." All of those who participate in the program will have the opportunity to draw a dragon and compete for a prize for the most frightening and original depiction.
The contest will be divided into 3 age categories: Pre-K to 1st grade--who will have the option of drawing or coloring a dragon, 2nd through 4th grades and 5th grade and up will be required to create their own original designs. The contest will begin on June 14 and all entries must be submitted for judging by June 24. Children should put their name on the back of the drawing where no one can see it and put their age on the front for judging purposes.
There will also be a contest to make as many words as you can that are more than three letters long from the words KNIGHTS-DRAGONS. Those entries must also be submitted by June 24, only one entry per person. Your librarian made over 100 words. Can you beat that? The age groups for this contest will be 2nd to 4th grades and 5th grade and up. Each student may enter the contest only once. Winners must be present to receive prizes. Last week was a busy and exciting week at the Bronson Library. On Tuesday, July 5th, Mr. Jim Merrill entertained 28 children and 12 adults with his magic program. He taught the youngsters how to tie a knot in a short piece of rope by holding one end of the rope in one hand and the other end in the other hand. The trick is to tie the knot without letting go of the ends of the rope. Sound easy parents? Try it! Then have your child show you how. He then showed the kids how to make a coin disappear. He also taught the children how to juggle and other fun tricks. Jim will return to Bronson on Friday July 22nd at 1:00 PM to present a program on cup stacking and those in attendance will be given a chance to try cup stacking. Every child who completed the Summer Reading program will be given a goodie bag and a free book of their choice.
On Friday, July 8th, Mike Standiford, the Balloon Man, entertained a crowd of children and parents with his amazing talent for making original objects using nothing but colored balloons. Each child was allowed to challenge Mike with their requests ranging from animals to dragons to angels and even a blacksmith! The youngsters finished the event with a parade showing off their designs. Following the program, prizes were awarded for several Summer reading program contests. Five year old Drew Stevens was cited for coloring the best Dragon picture. Nine year old Conner Young won for the best original drawing of a dragon. Courtney Ammon won for best original Dragon for ages 10 and over. Nine year old Ruhl Cook ran away with the contest to find as many 3 letter words that could be made using only the letters in the words "Dragon" and "Knight." He amazed us all by finding over 300 words and admitted he spent many hours with a dictionary! Great work, kids!
The Bronson Library will be open during regular hours Thursday and Friday during the Polish Festival. The library will be closed Saturday July 16th.

Tuesday, July 12th, Deb Klavinski and Sally Lippert from the Bronson Area Family and Youth Center introduced 32 youngsters to our library for an instructional tour. Carole showed the children where the various types of books were located and how they were cataloged. She informed them that they must have a valid library card to check out books and materials and to use the library's bank of computers. Carole told them how to sign up to use a computer and explained that our computers contain filters that prevent unwanted materials that are considered unsafe for children and deny the use of chat rooms. Usage is limited to 30 minutes per visit. If the user is doing homework, they may be allowed a few minutes more to complete their task. Any one under the age of 17 is considered a child under library rules. We are proud that the Youth and Family Center has allowed our library to participate in the wonderful work and programs they offer the young people of Bronson. If you haven't visited the center, please take time to do so soon.
Friday, July 22nd at 1:00 PM, Mr Jim Merrill will return to our library to present a demonstration "Cup Stacking" for the youngsters and the kids will be encouraged to try their skills with cups supplied by Mr. Jim. Popcorn and drinks will be passed out following the program. All children who enrolled in The Summer Reading Program are requested to turn in their book lists at this time if they have not done so already. Members of the Friends of the Library helped fill the "Goodie Bags" and will be on hand to pass refreshments.

The Summer Reading Program, "Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds came to an exciting close with a giant party on Friday, July 22. The young entrants each read an average of 28 books. 37 children completed the program for a total of over 1000 books read this summer. We congratulate all those who participated in the program and urge them to keep up the good work. Each school principal will be notified with the names and grades of the children who completed the event. 36 children and 15 adults attended the awards party. Mr. Jim Merrills presented a program on cup stacking. He supplied the kids with cups and instructed them in the secrets of cup stacking. Everyone had a great time developing their talents. Any one interested in magic, juggling, cup stacking etc. can visit "Mr Jim's" web site at http://www.mr-jim.com for further information.
Following Mr. Jim's presentation, the children were awarded their prizes and a huge goodie bag filled with delights and each child received a free book to take home. The gifts and prizes were made possible by the following generous donors: Meijer, Bronson Strike Zone, Fine and Fancys Park Place, State Farm Insurance, 5 Star Pizza, The Viking Express, Subway Sandwich Shop, Luvin Spoonfuls, White Star Auction, Southern Michigan Gymnastics and the Branch County 4-H Fair. Popcorn and juice were served to the children. For many years the Bronson Public Library was without a Friends group. In late 1998, it was decided that the Friends of the Bronson Public Library should be reorganized. A drive to reform the group was spearheaded by Vera Hurd, Loranetta Diebel, Roberta Smith and Carole Maddox. A meeting was held on November 17, 1998 with 27 people in attendance. By-laws were written and officers elected and the "Friends" became an established and viable member of the community. The first major goal of the group was to have our library recognized as a historical building. After many months of hard work and much correspondence by Loranetta Diebel, the historical marker was purchased and arrived in late February, 2001. The marker was installed on the South East lawn and a dedication ceremony was held on Sunday, May 6th, 2001 with a large crowd in attendance. The Friends of the Bronson Library was off and running.
An open house will be held at the Bronson Library from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 28th to honor the founders of the reorganized Friends of the Bronson Library. We invite everyone to join us in recognizing these great ladies for their foresight, dedication and devotion to our beloved library. Their efforts laid the groundwork for all the accomplishments that have taken place since. Please make time to stop in and help us express our thanks and admiration for their leadership.
During the open house, the Friends awards committee will unveil several plaques that will be permanently hung inside the main entrance of the Library. These plaques will carry the names of our many benefactors, donors and sponsors who have so generously supported our Historic Library over these many years. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Friends of the Bronson Library will be holding an Open House Sunday, August 28th from 2 PM until 4 PM at the Bronson Library. The event will be held to honor and thank the founders of the present Friends Group. The awards committee will unveil several plaques engraved with the names of our many benefactors, donors and sponsors who have so generously supported our library over the years. If you haven't visited the library lately, please join us Sunday and view the new look and features of your library and help us honor these wonderful and dedicated ladies for their foresight and untiring devotion to our precious library as we approach it's one-hundredth birthday. Refreshments will be served.
The Friends of the Library held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 16th in the basement meeting room. The members discussed plans for future events and projects to continue upgrading the building and grounds. Our patrons have suggested we install a drinking fountain on the main floor and a committee was named to look into the project. It was decided that a newsletter should be drawn up for mailing in March of 2006. Several fund raising ideas were on the table and plans for more children's programs are in the works. We encourage all parents to present ideas they would like to see in the future. Please support your library. Join the Friends of the Bronson Library today!!!

Sunday, August 28, 2005 will always be a very special date for your library. The open house celebration held to recognize and honor the founders of The Friends of the Bronson Library was a rousing success. Over seventy local guests and well-wishers stopped in to offer their thanks and praise to Loranetta Diebel, Roberta Smith, Vera Hurd and Carole Maddox. These four great ladies foresaw the need of a Friends group and their combined efforts and hard work brought about the rebirth of the Friends of the Bronson Library. A litany of new programs, events and improvements have taken place due to their drive and tenacity. All three of the former presidents, Loranetta Diebel, Roberta Smith, and Betty Rissman were in attendance. City Manager David O'Rourke gave the opening address and outlined the Friends accomplishments since its inception. A beautifully decorated cake was the centerpiece of an arrangement of refreshments.
The Friends award committee of Eleanor Fowler, Gayle Clover and Jeanne Unterkircher presented to the group a pair of wall plaques recognizing the founders, donors and supporters of the Friends and the Bronson Public Library. The committee is currently checking the files and more names will be added to the plaques. The Bronson Public Library will celebrate its one-hundredth birthday in 2011. If you missed the open house or haven't visited your library lately, please stop in, look around and just say hello.

This week, the 3 second grade classes from Anderson School, totaling 60 children, visited our library. Carole told them how they could get a library card and how to care for books that they borrow. Pat got to do her favorite thing and read them a story. Then all of the children got to pick a book of their choice from the juvenile section and sit on the floor and read for awhile. Some of the children even read Pat a story. A good time was had by all.

This week has been a very sorrowful time for the Friends of The Bronson Public Library. One of our honored founders and beloved friend, Roberta "Bert" Smith left us this week. Her passing leaves a great empty spot in our hearts that can never be filled. Bert was able to attend a recent affair honoring the founders of the Friends of the Library and her many admirers were there to salute her and thank her for her dedication to our library. Bert will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Many thanks to Margaret Handel for her donation to the Friends of the Library in memory of beloved friend and founder, Roberta Smith.
Oct. 27 is the birth date of an asthmatic child who would grow up to become an adventurer, a Rough Rider, and the 26th President of the USA, Teddy Roosevelt. On Nov. 13, 1902, Teddy went bear hunting with some friends and after a long chase they cornered the exhausted bear. Teddy's friends tied the bear to a tree so that Teddy could shoot it, but he refused and had the bear set free, saying that would be unsportsmanlike. His friends teased him and called the bear a "Teddy bear," and it has been known as such until this very day. Oct. 27 has been designated "Teddy Bear Day" to honor Teddy Roosevelt. Bring your favorite Teddy Bear to the library with his/her name on a tag around its neck and we will display them for the enjoyment of our patrons. While you are here, why not check out a book about bears. We have books about the Berenstain Bears, Winnie the Pooh, and many other entertaining articles
The library received a visit from Ms. Rommel's 2nd grade class on Wed., Oct. 5. Forty-two little ears listened carefully as Carole told the children about the library and how to care for borrowed books. Pat read them a story about Henry and Mudge. The children then had the opportunity to look at various books that they took from the children's section. Needless to say, Henry and Mudge books disappeared first. Many of the children wanted to know how to get a library card and were told that their parent or guardian must come in and sign a card. Library cards are free to Branch County Residents. It only takes a minute to fill out a card that will benefit your child for a lifetime.

The Friends of the Bronson Library held the final meeting of 2005 at 4:00 PM on Tuesday November 15th. The members congratulated and thanked the Bronson Woman's Club for their donation of funds from their highly successful bake sale at The Family Dollar store recently. The gift will be put to good use in supporting your library. Plans were discussed for the coming year and several large projects were presented. The Library is in need of major repairs or replacement of its heating and air conditioning system. Three local firms were asked for estimates. The need for a unisex restroom for library patrons was acknowledged. Plans for installing a lift or elevator were reviewed. A great many of our older patrons and senior citizens do not or cannot climb or descend the 2 banks of steep stairs to reach the main floor or the stairway to the basement. Most of our elderly citizens are avid readers and books are their favorite pastime and therapy. Gayle Clover has spent untold hours researching these programs and the members gave Gayle the authority to obtain professional advice and proposals on the items. The friends are searching for funds or grants to cover some of the costs involved.
Nov. 26 is the birthday of Charles Schultz, the genius of American comics who created a fantasy world that connected to adults as well as children. Saturday, December 17th will be a very special day at the Bronson Public Library. Head librarian, Carole Maddox, is planning to retire after 33 years of dedicated service to the citizens of the Bronson area. Carole plans to leave her position around the second week of January, 2006. The Friends of the Bronson Library will hold a going away party from 9:00 to 11.00 AM on the 17th so all her many friends and admirers can stop in and greet her. There will be light refreshments served. Please plan to be there and wish Carole well in her much deserved retirement.
There are still some chances left for the handmade afghan being raffled off by the Bronson Woman's Club. Tickets are available at the library and from members of the Club. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The afghan will be given away at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17th at the party for Carole Maddox. You need not be present to win.
In the past few months the Friends of the Bronson Library have been attempting to properly acknowledge and honor the four dedicated ladies whose efforts have made the Friends a viable and successful organization. Many of our patrons have asked for pictures of the founders. We now have a framed display of portraits of the four women we hold so dear: Roberta "Bert" Smith, Loranetta Diebel, Vera Hurd and Carole Maddox. To our sorrow, Bert Smith recently left us and we are certain that if there are libraries in heaven, Bert will be smiling. Please stop in soon to view their portraits.
New books at your library:
Help, Lord! I'm Having A Senior Moment: Notes to God on Growing Older by Karen O'Conner. Funny moments, touching moments, moments we'd rather forge. Like it or not, senior moments happen—and not always just to seniors. We might as well laugh about them and the way that they add interest to our lives. After all, what would life be like without the cordless phone ringing faintly from somewhere in the fridge, or trying to make a call with the remote? Author O'Connor has hit upon the things that we least enjoy about getting older and helps us realize that we can take them to the One who cares for us.
The Night of Las Posadas by Tome de Paola tells the story of a modern day Las Posadas procession in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
We now have 12 books in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

This Saturday, December 17, the Friends of the Bronson Library will host an open house retirement party for librarian Carole Maddox. Carole has tirelessly served the folks in the Bronson area for thirty-three years. We encourage all her many friends and patrons to join us in celebrating her much deserved break from the daily grind. We know she is anxious to spend more time with her family and treasured grandchildren. Please take time to stop in at the library from 9:00 AM til Noon on Saturday and help us express our thanks and love to Carole.
The Bronson Advisory Board met on Dec. 7 to elect new officers for 2006. The Board acts as a liaison between the local governmental units and the Branch District Library System. Members consist of 3 representatives from the Bronson Township, each serving 2 years, and 3 members from the City of Bronson who serve 3 years. Gayle Clover was chosen as President and Jean Unterkircher as Vice-President, joining fellow board members Harriet Smith, Jan Lehman, Rose Jordan, and Ann Wotta for another year of service to your library.
Following the election of officers, four bids for a new library furnace were reviewed and the lowest bid from a local business was accepted. The new heating/cooling system will be installed in mid-January. We are hoping this can be done over a week-end so that there will be as little inconvenience as possible for our patrons.
New Books:
Images of America: Branch County by Randall Hazelbaker, a Branch County historian who has collected memorabilia related to local history for over 25 yrs. He has researched and hosted several local history programs that have aired on cable television. He is also the author of the book, Coldwater.
Night Fever by Diana Palmer. Rebecca didn't want to fall in love with District Attorney Rourke Kilpatrick. At 24, she was saddled with the job of raising her two teen-age brothers, tending their Georgia farm, caring for her grandfather and earning a living. Then her brother was arrested on drug charges…
Tilt-A-Whirl, a mystery by Chris Grabenstein, it's by turns fun, funny, and scary.
Eldest, the spellbinding sequel to Eragon, by 19 year-old Christopher Paolini is the new "it" book for young adults. It is written in the tradition of the classic heroic quest fantasy, with dwarves, elves, dragons, and some imaginatively creepy creatures of evil.
New Videos:
Polar Express
March of the Penguins
Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
The Bronson Library will be closed for Christmas on December 24th, 25th and 26th, re-opening at noon on Tuesday, December 27th.

SSaturday, December 17th, the Friends of the Bronson Library hosted an open house for librarian Carole Maddox. Carole is retiring after thirty-three years of faithful service to the folks in the Bronson area. She will leave her post in mid January. More than fifty of her friends and admirers dropped in to honor and thank her for her help and guidance and for her always present smile. Carole was presented with a lovely corsage and a card signed by the many guests who came to wish her well in her retirement.
A beautifully decorated cake was shared by the attendees and soft drinks and coffee were served. Branch District Library Director Bruce Mills joined the crowd and gave Carole his best wishes. Several of Carole's family members also were on hand. The event was arranged and set up by Gayle Clover, Jeanne Unterkircher and Jan Lehman. Gayle could not attend the event as she was called away to be presented with an early Christmas gift, a beautiful new baby granddaughter. We wish to thank Pat Rothrock for carrying on the library duties during the event and to all those who came to honor Carole.
As part of the open house event, The Bronson Woman's Club chose the winner of the afghan raffle. The lucky ticket was drawn by Carole's grandson, Alex Young, and the winner was Michelle McClish of Bronson. The coverlet was handmade by Ethel Osborn who was delighted for the winner. The money raised was added to the amount made at the "Make-a-Difference Day" bake sale which brought the total to $618.00. The funds will go to the library to purchase books and programs for the children. Our hats are off to Doris Kehoe and all the members of the club.

As we approach the new year, we reflect on the passing year 2005. It has been a time of joy and accomplishment and a period of sadness. We look at the refurbished office area, the successful Summer reading programs, the events held for the children, the many fine new books and videos, the upgrading of our computer banks and all the hard work done by the Friends of the Library. We also had sorrow this year. Our beloved founder and dear friend, Roberta "Bert" Smith left us and our long time head librarian and counselor, Carole Maddox will soon be retiring. We look ahead to the new year with high hopes and anticipation. We have several projects and plans in the works and with the encouragement and support of the folks in our area we see a great 2006.
On Tuesday, December 20th, Carole presented the winner of the afghan raffle with her prize on behalf of the Bronson Woman's Club. Michelle McClish, of Bronson held the winning ticket. We wish to thank all those who purchased chances and made the event a success.
The Bronson Library staff and the Friends of the Bronson Library wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year.
