The Branch District Library is pleased to offer wireless Internet access to our patrons at all library locations. Here are the answers to a few questions you might have about this new service.
Q. How can I use the wireless internet access?
A. Wireless access uses the Wi-FiĀ® standard. Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize our wireless network. The Library's network uses the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard, which is backwards-compatible with older 802.11b/g wireless cards. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library's network.
Q. How does it work?
A. Wireless access points located throughout the Library communicate with your wireless device over radio waves. You should be able to connect almost anywhere in the building. When your wireless network card senses a signal, a message appears on your screen indicating that a wireless network is available, called Branch Dist. Lib. Public Access
. Connect to that network, then you're done. If you get a message warning you that the network is not secure, asking you if you want to continue, say yes. We want everybody to be able to use our network, so we do not require a password to connect to it.
Q. Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
A. No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required.
Q. Is my information safe while using wireless?
A. Information you transmit and receive online is not protected while using wireless, unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.). Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information. Anti-virus protection on your laptop is your responsibility.
Q. Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
A. Wireless users agree to abide by the Library's Computer and Internet Acceptable Use Policy, which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library's Internet services. Certain Internet traffic may be throttled or blocked to ensure network optimal network performance. Also, web pages will be filtered to block pornography, in compliance with state and federal laws.
Q. Can I print while I'm using wireless?
A. Printing is available at all BDL branches.
Q. Can the Library help me configure my computer?
A. Sorry, everyone's computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. We do have some general instructions for setting up your wireless, but if you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the technical support of the hardware or software manufacturer of your equipment.
