Seaman Dire *7 �A BRIEF HISTORY of the COLDWATER HIWANIS CLUB r Member ar By OSCAR RENSHAW ~ of the Club History Com it Our community was inspired during the earlier World War by the ideal of ‘making the world safe for democracy When the war produced “pieces with victory’ but no peace, we were disillusioned and turned away from world affairs and toward a new American dream of ever increasing abund ance of wealth by way of mass production We were again disillusioned when idleness and bankruptcy became all too common. Idealism and materialism had failed; we were discouraged It was then, 1935, that wiser men came out of the east — the land of hills and dales bringing with them a practical approach to more purposeful living They talked of Kiwanis with a motto “We Buile Build what? The relationship began Aug. 7, 1958, after the club had used the Arlington Motel for several years. Then, there were 81 club members and now just one current member was in the club that day. In honor of his tireless efforts to form this new Rotary club Frank Rowe became the first President. The club‘s Charter 1044 was presented to the members on January 5, 1922 by District Governor George Barnes. On January 17, 1922 Herbert Sebald became the club's 23rd member. His son Craig has been a member for 61 years. In the 100 years the club has met in three locations. It began at St. Marks Parish Hall, then to the place of the beginning, Arlington Hotel, then the Elks Lodge. Its relationship with the Elks has lasted 63 years since the first meeting there on August 12, 1958. In 1937 our club supported the newly formed clubs in Quincy and Bronson. These new clubs made a very convenient place to make-up. In 1986 our club sponsored the newly formed Coldwater Sunrise Club. The Sunrise Club received its Charter on October 28, 1986 when all the Branch County Rotary Clubs met for the evening event. Robert Seaman was the first president of Sunrise. we ye Ve To name just a few of the untold numbers that the Coldwater club can be proud of in helping the community would include holding the 1994 District 6360 Annual Conference. In 1986 the club established the Coldwater Rotary Foundation and its objectives were to make the community a better place to live, work, and play. The club participates in Rotary International Humanitarian projects, Polio Plus and Clean Water. In the interest of promoting Rotary further in May 1991 the Interact Club of Coldwater High School was established sponsored by our club. Their members attend as guests at weekly club meetings during the school year. Interact members support the community throughout the year with fund raising activities. During the club’s 100 years of support the community nothing can rival the annual fund raising Rotary Show. The 2022 show will be its 66th. The first show was held in 1935 and profits were used to aid the Crippled Children’s Fund. Since 1991, Interact has been providing service to both C.HLS. as well as the community of Coldwater. The goals of Interact are quite simple: 1.) to promote the idea of service to our local community, and 2) to open young people’s minds to the world in which we live. With those two goals in mind the following will give a partial list of activities that our Club members are involved in this year. We have also made it a point to invite foreign exchange students into our organization and this year they have played an integral part in making or organization a success. We truly enjoy having them as members. After this year, we will have given out over $25,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years to needy students at C.H.S as well as helping raise money for our local Veterans organization to aid in the buying of a new handicapped accessible van. Interact members raise money through our annual Interact Raffle, as well as providing refreshments for the Rotary Show. Interact members have one thing in common; they care about themselves and the greater community that they live in. They are very involved in school activities and yet they find the time to give something back to our school as well as our community. This year is an exciting year for us. Thanks to a wonderful donation by the Women who Care of Branch County we are inaugurating a fun event for all students in Branch County called the ABC Challenge. The ABC Challenge (Awesome Branch County) is an obstacle course/mud run to be held at the Branch County Fairgrounds will continue in 2022. The Branch County Rotary Clubs (Coldwater, Sunrise, Bronson, and Quincy) have agreed to be our title sponsor with the Coldwater Noon Rotary Club sponsoring all the events taking place in the Amphitheater at the Fairgrounds. This will be a great fund raiser for our organization and we will be giving back thousands of dollars to local schools as well as other needy organizations in Branch County with the proceeds we raise from our event. This has been a busy and exciting time for our club and we would like to thank the Coldwater Rotary Club for all their help and support. It has also been a pleasure to be a part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration.
