| ROTARY CLUB

1921 -1996

WELCOME
It is with great pleasure and honor I
welcome you to the 75th anniversary of the
Coldwater Rotary Club. This celebration gives
us an opportunity to pause and reflect on our
rich history of community service. As with the
presidents who have come before me, I find
great pleasure in working with my fellow

Rotarians. Be it with our ever successful

Rotary Show, granting of college scholarships,

or Kid’s Christmas Party, “Service Above.
Self” is always evident. We are proud of this
history and will use it to build a brighter
future for our club and our community.

We hope you enjoy this evening’s
fellowship and festivities !

COLDWATER

ROTARY NEWS NOV. 1921

The stage is set. The preparations are complete and on Thursday
evening, November 10, the good ship Rotary Club of Coldwater will
be launched with all due cast and ceremony. Expert judgement has
selected the material for this ship. Skillful hands have fabricated it.
Hard work has brought it to the point of completion and when it shall
have been launched, the loyal optimism of its builders and crew will
make it one of the neatest and trimmest little barks that sail the great
ROTARY SEA.
THE DAY IS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10; THE PLACE,
ARLINGTON HOTEL; THE TIME, 6:30 P.M.
The Organization Committee is greatly pleased with the crew which
has been signed up to launch this boat. Listen to the roll call.
“George” Branch. Dry goods merchant. A fellow who stands true to
his country and his name. (He has Branched out twice since the
War).

“Neil” Carroll. Auburn haired and freckled, yet kind and gentle and
well broken to domesticity. Favorite recreation is making public
speeches.
“Fred” Chambers. The human pepper pot and ginger jar. Generally
leaps before he looks but usually manages to land right side up.
“Hugh” Clarke. The human crab. Would find fault with Heaven if he
ever got there. Runs a drug store and loves his wife and family.
“Ollie” Deabler. Sells furniture and spends a great deal of time in
attempting to correct his one fault, an over powering desire to
make himself conspicuous when in public.
“Eddie” Freeland. Depends on “Pull” for a living but is really a most
patient and persevering man. Who else would attempt to fill a five
acre pond with golf balls all in one day.
“Bert” Fisk.

A loud voiced coal man. In spite of his business, he is

suspected of being honest. Would rather make a speech than eat,
but will keep still if you insist.
“Ren” Jones. Makes cement and loves to cultivate the society of the
great and famous. Just now he is greatly puffed up over meeting
Judge Landis.
“Tra” King. Superintendent of Schools. He oils and greases the cogs
and wheels of the Knowledge Machine and keeps peace and
harmony in his little flock of young and blushing schoolmarms.

COLDWATER

ROTARY NEWS (con’t)

“Bob” Kerr. The Hardware King. Has two ambitions in life. One, to
have the best hardware store in Coldwater; the other, to have the

largest family. Is doing well with the store proposition.
“Harry” Lansing. Newspaper manager and editor. The Worlds Champion Booster and Promoter. Always ready to start anything from a
dog fight to a camp ‘meeting. Not bashful.
“Ed” Legg. Mayor, soldier, fisherman and greatest living authority on
the Chinese game of Fan Tan. Sells lumber on the side.
“Harry” Milnes. One of our widely known citizens. A “go-getter” who
will tackle any sort of a job-the hardest one he ever struck is
making that little golf ball behave.
“Chas Rufus” Osborn. A square toed sort of a preacher who feels that
there may be a little good in the worst of this bunch.
“Frank” Rowe. Representative of the Beef Trust. Soak him, boys, Frank

doesn’t mind and it may relieve your feelings.
“Roy” Shattuck. Our popular undertaker. Some people are actually
“dying’ to do business with him.
“Sam” Schultz. The big Dutch “Doc”, always a little late, but never too
late if the eats promise well.
“Herb” Sloman. Sells men’s clothes and women’s hosiery. A good sport
who will always take a chance if the odds are right.

Geo. Barnes, well known to Coldwater people, has said he will be
present at this meeting. He is Governor of the Ninth District of Rotary
Clubs.

The Hillsdale Rotary Club will also be here forty strong (their full
membership) to show us how a real Rotary Meeting is conducted. It’s
up to us to show them what Coldwater can do in the way of a “peppy”
organization meeting. Go to it and please
BE ON TIME.

Four Way Test

The 4 Way Test
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Thank You!

Rotary

Show

History

The first Rotary Minstrel show was performed in 1937 at the Tibbits Theatre. The Rotary

wives were part of the show and chorus along with other community acts. The show
directed by Maurice Payne, who was the AAA insurance man here for many years.

was

The modern shows began in 1956 when Payne decided to revive the Rotary Minstrel show

Wives were no longer a part of the show but various community acts outside Rotary participated. The show was held at the Roosevelt Auditorium which was then the Coldwater High
School. Interestingly we should note that from the time that 1937 show was held until the

1956 show, the Tibbits had gone down hill to the extent that it was no longer used for this

type of thing.

Maurice Payne directed the first two shows and was replaced by Ed Holtz, who was a
partner at Kiess Jewelry for many years. Payne died about this time and the 1958 show

was dedicated to him. The next five shows were directed by Holtz and were always Minstrel
shows.
In 1958 the shows returned to the Tibbits theatre as restoration was taking place and along

with the Coldwater Sweet Adelines, Rotary took a leading part in that restoration. Since

that time a large share of the income from the Rotary shows have gone

to the Tibbits.

Duane (Duke) Davidson, then general manager of the Coldwater Daily Reporter, directed

the first non-minstrel show, called the Naughty-Naughty

Nineties in 1964

After the Nineties show a series of shows based on the twenties and forties were produced. John Visosky began directing shows at this time. John was high school band director and
directed three Rotary shows before moving to Florida.

In 1969 the club decided that maybe a Rotary show was too much work and the club decided

to sponsor a show at the Tibbits rather than produce one. We

In 1970 the club decided that selling tickets was not nearly as much fun as putting on the

whole show so Duke was called upon to again direct a show. We decided to name the shows
something without a theme so that we could use all types of songs at random.

John

Dan Magsig,

It is interesting to note that the show directors, with the exception of Visosky, came from
all walks of life other than those directly connected with music. All the performers are
businessmen from Branch County. The show is entirely produced by members of the Rotary

club, who, once a year devote many hours of Peesinbiened shor construction time to the project.
There are so many people to be recognized for their contributions to the Rotary shows

_

over the years it is impossible to include them all. Some mention should be made of those
who labor back stage, or as ushers, and in the chorus. Many committees and chairmen put
in many hours with only their names in the program for credit. In this regard, we should mention that Santford Jolley has designed the back drops for the show for the past 25 years.

History

of The Minstrel

Show

The minstrel show, a purely native form of entertainment, was America’s unique contribu-

tion to the history of the theatre. In imitation of the singing and dancing of plantation slaves,
white minstrels, their faces and hands blackened with burnt cork, built their performances on

the songs, humor and pathos, superstitions and peculiarities of the Negro, until there emerged the Negro of the minstrel and the joke book tradition. This was more a burlesque than
a faithful imitation, and the minstrel songs were conventional compositions by white men, rather
than original Negro melodies.
Negro performers appeared in America as early as the 18th century, before 1830, blackface
uctors were prominent in the circus, theatre and concert halls, singing such favorites as “Coal
e

Dartmouth (Daddy) Rice, whose performance of song and dance number, “Jim

Crow,’' in the early theatres of the Ohio Valley, led scores of other actors to imitate his burlesof the carefree, dancing singing Negro, in museums and menangeries, in the theatre and
minstrel

of the

show.

The first minstrel show was presented in New York in 1843, by Daniel Decature Emmett,
Frank LR Brower, ‘’Billy’’ Whitlock and ‘’Dick’’ Pelham. This quartette, known as the Virginia

Minstrels,

anc attired in gaudy costume, produced a whole evening’s entertainment, on the

The stereotype of the American minstrel show was fixed by the E. P. Christy Minstrels as
early as the 1850's. In the first part the show opened with a well-executed song and dance
drill across the stage. At the famous command

from the interlocutor, ““Gentlemen, Be Seated,”

the performers took their places in a semi-circle, with the endmen, attired in extravagant and

colorful costumes, and equipped with tambourines, bones and castanets, sitting at the ends,
and the interlocutor in the middle.

There followed a well coordinated program of ballads, choruses and jokes, the black-faced

endmen furnishing the comedy in lively repartee with the interlocutor. Minstrel songs and joke
books were issued by the thousands in the heyday of minstrelsy.

The first part was followed by the olio with a variety of specialties comparable to the
vaudeville show. There followed musical and dancing acts ending with a farce, or a song

and dancing number, known as the “breakdown” or ‘hoe down” in which all members of

minstrel craze swept the country. By the time of the Civil War, scores of troupes toured the
rovinces and played three-a-day shows in the best theatres of the leading cities from coast

The Interact Club of Coldwater High School is a service club sponsored by the Coldwater Rotary Club.

Since 1991, Interact has

The goals of Interact are quite simple: 1.) to promote the idea

of service to our local community, and 2) to open young people’s minds to the world in which we live. With those two goals in mind the
following will give a partial list of activities that our Club members are involved in this year.
In regards to community service, we have participated in the State’s Adopt-A-Highway
Many

Interactors are involved in an after-school tutoring program run by Legg Middle School.

Over 1/3 of our members are also involved

in a mentoring program at Legg Middle School as well as a mentoring program established by Big Brother/Big Sisters in our elementary
schools.

Our organization participates in the Big Brothers/Sisters Bowl-A-Thon; we purchase Christmas gifts for needy children, and have

Interact members work concession stands and put on dances to help raise

the money needed to fund our various activities
One of the truly great projects that we initiated when we started as a club was to invite all the new Exchange Students to be a part
of our organization. This has given many of them more of an opportunity to interact with American students as well as expanding their circle
of friends considerably. This helps to give them more activities to participate in while they are here in this country.
Interact members have one thing in common; they care about themselves and the greater community that they live in. They are very
involved in school activities and yet they find the time to give something back to our school as well as our community.
This has been a busy and exciting time for our club and we would like to thank the Coldwater Rotary Club for all their help and
support. We would also like to wish them all the best with this year’s Rotary Show.

Congratulations on a job well done!
