Our community was inspired during the earlier World War by the
ideal of
‘making the world safe for democracy
When the war produced
“pieces with victory’ but no peace, we were disillusioned and turned away from
world affairs and toward a new American dream of ever increasing abund
ance of wealth by way of mass production
We were again disillusioned
when idleness and bankruptcy became all too common.
Idealism and materialism had failed; we were discouraged
It was then, 1935, that wiser men came out of the east — the land
of hills and dales
bringing with them a practical approach to more purposeful living
They talked of Kiwanis with a motto “We Buile

Walter

Gospell,

YMCA

Daniels, President of the Hills
secretary;

Lieutenant-governor

Charley LeFurge of I ansing; Ben Dean, a native of Branch County, then President of the Michigan District of Kiwanis
Their answers seem to be: Men
and

We were convinced.
A new Kiwanis Club with twentyeight members was chartered May 8, 1935 under the leadership of Dr. Lemuel

Kiwanis directed us to the fundamentels of personal and community

Biographical information and photographs will be presented when they are available.

Each veteran's name is associated with a location number, representing the position on the Memorial Wall where the name may be found. The number is comprised of the following parts:

F = FRONT - Front side of the wall is facing the bridge.

B = BACK - Back side of the wall is facing the flag.

C = CENTER - Larger column of names are in the middle of the wall.

R = RIGHT SIDE - All names to the right side of center column.

L = LEFT SIDE - All columns of names to the left side of center column.

For example, Thomas Madden's Veteran's location number is BR-7-16. His name is on the back of the wall, right side of the center column, in the 7th column, and the 16th name from the top.
(Back Right - column 7 - 16th from top) - BR - 7 - 16

For example, John R Lake's Veteran's location number is FL-4-08. His name is on the front of the wall, left side of the center column, in the 4th column, and the 8th name from the top.
(Front Left - column 4 - 8th from top): FL - 4 - 8

The Veteran's Wall is made by the American Legion Post #196. This Veteran's Wall index was made by Kathyleen Madden and presented by the Branch District Library.
