Welcome!

The Coldwater Rotary Club cordially welcomes you to
the Minstrel Show of 1958. We hope to give you an

evening of fun and entertainment.
Proceeds from this show help the local Rotary Club in
its program of Youth Activities. The Club sponsors a boy
each year at Wolverine Boys' State where prospective
leaders learn about the operation of our State Govern
ment. Each summer we sponsor a boy at the Rotary Youth
Leadership Training session at Camp Emory near Muske
gon. We also sponsor our high school students in their
attendance at the Little United Nations held at Hillsdale

College each year.
We have contributed to a fund for building a caretaker's lodge at Boy Scout Camp T. Ben Johnson near Battle
Creek. Our pledge to this project was $2,400.00 and we
have paid $1,600.00 to date. The proceeds from the sale
of tickets and from the advertisements appearing in this
program will be applied to complete our pledge on this

project.

Thank you for your help in making this part of our

Rotary program a success.
Now sit back and have fun as we present The Minstrels
of 1958.
On with the showl

60) ROTARY CLUB™------------------- -

History of The Club
s HE IDEA of forming a Rotary Club in Coldwater came into
the minds of several people at several different times before
L the actual establishment of the club. Dame rumor has it
that at least three different attempts were made and that
various stages of progress were reached. However, in view of the
fact that but two or three of the Charter Members of the Coldwater
Rotary Club as organized and chartered as of December 1st, 1921, K
were previously approached or have any knowledge of the earlier
history of the movement, it is probable that no authentic data will
ever be secured covering this period of time.
Consulting the files of the general office of Rotary Interna
tional in Chicago, we find that on January 8th, 1920, Hugh VandeWalker of Ypsilanti, who at that time was Governor of the ninth
district of Rotary clubs, took up with headquarters the question of
establishing a Rotary club in Coldwater. At his request, on January
15 th, Harrison Fletcher was named as chairman of the organizing
committee, and on January 27th, Fred L. Gallop of Ypsilanti, as
Special Representative.
The records at headquarters are silent as to what immediately
followed, but from members who were approached at that time, it
is authoritatively established that Mr. Fletcher made an active cam
paign to establish a club and that considerable progress was made".
Report has it that fifteen Charter Members were selected,
when, without much warning, the project was suddenly declared
dead. Again we fall back on rumor, although it seems pretty
clearly established that the sudden demise of the club at this stage
was.due to the objections of one man, who not understanding the
theory, ideas or ethics of Rotary and being unwilling to study or
learn them, believed most honestly, we think, that Rotary would

interfere with such organizations as were already established in
Coldwater and create an ill feeling. He prevailed on the interested
parties to cease their activities.
Hugh VandeWalker’s term as District Governor came to an
end in July of 1920, and Ray Davis of St. Joseph, became Governor.
At his request, Eddie Duesenberg of Kalamazoo, was appointed
special representative for Coldwater. From the records at head
quarters it appears that Mr. Fletcher still held his appointment as
chairman of the organizing committee. Mr. Duesenberg never
reported any progress to headquarters.

In February of 1921, Frank Rowe came to Coldwater from
South Bend, Indiana. He was in the employ of Armour & Company
as Special Representative for that company, with a considerable
territory under his charge. Frank had been a worker in South Bend
in Church Classes, Boys’ Work and other jobs where service without
visible reward is the rule. He had been the guest of his manager,
Frank Eby, of the South Bend Rotary Club, at several Rotary lunch
eons and had become extremely interested in Rotary.
On coming to Coldwater, and finding he was eligible to mem
bership, he set about canvassing the field with a view to organizing
a Rotary Club. He did this quietly, meeting some rebuffs and con
siderable interest. Finally, some time in the summer he had a
long ta'k with Charles Rufus Osborn, then minister of the Baptist
church, who advised Frank to talk with three men, one of whom
was Fred Chambers. Before doing this, however, Frank, feeling
pretty sure of his ground, wrote Secretary General Chesley Perry in
Chicago, asking about the prospect of establishing a Rotary Club in
Coldwater.
On the 6th day of October, Frank received word from Chicago
that they were pleased to note a desire for a Rotary club in Cold
water, and that his letter had been referred to George Barnes of
Flint, who had become District Governor the previous July. George
Barnes immediately got into communication with Frank and from
that time on the work of organization went forward rapidly.
On October 15th the appointments of Harrison Fletcher as
Chairman of the Organizing Committee, and of Eddie Duesenberg
as Special Representative, which had never been recalled, were ter
minated by authority. On the same day, George Lyons of Hillsdale,

COLDWATER (s ROTARY CLUB—----

---- —

was appointed by Governor George Barnes as his Special Repre
sentative, and on the 24th of October, Frank Rowe was named as
chairman of the organizing committee.
Frank then called on Fred Chambers, and these two men
picked as the three other members of the committee O’Neill Carroll,
Herbert Sloman and Hugh Clarke. These five men met with George
Lyons and the other Directors of the Hillsdale Club at the home of
Mr. Chambers and planned the forming of a Club. A second meet
ing, a couple of days later, resulted in the selection of the Charter
Membership list and within a few days twenty men were signed up.
On Thursday evening, November 10th, twenty of these
___ twenty-two—the other two being out of town—met at the Arlington Hotel for dinner. President George Lyons of the Hillsdale Club,
and twenty-nine of his club were present. George presided at the
meeting and under his guidance a temporary organization was ef
fected, with Frank Rowe as temporary chairman and Hugh Clarke
as temporary secretary. It was voted to hold a meeting for per
manent organization a week from the next Friday night.
•
Accordingly on the evening of November 18th, the new Club,
together with thirty-seven Rotarians from Angola, eleven from 1 1
Adrian, ten from Sturgis, four from Hillsdale, and three from Battle | SY
Creek, met at the St. Mark’s Parish House. Frank Rowe and George )
Lyons presided and the temporary organization was made perma- i
nent, with the adoption of the standard Rotary Constitution and
By-Laws and the election of a Board of Directors—Frank, Rowe, I
c
Fred Chambers, O’Neill Carroll, Herbert Sloman, Harry Lansing, G 1
Rollo Thompson and Hugh Clarke were named directors.
/0
Application was also made for a charter from Rotary Interna
tional. The Board of Directors organized by electing Frank Rowe,
President; 0 Neill Carroll, Vice-President; Rollo Thompson, Treas
urer, and Hugh Clarke, Secretary.
The two final acts in the organization of the Coldwater Rotarv
Club came on December 12th, 1921, and on the evening of January
- 5th. On the first date, the charter of the Coldwater Club, num
ber 1044, was granted by the Board of Directors of the Interna
tional Association of Rotary Clubs. On the last named date Gover
nor George Barnes of Flint, was present with us and in an address
which will always be remembered by those who heard it, presented
the Club with its Charter.

A Message From President Frank
HE MORE I see of Rotary at work, the more I realize how it
influences men in their daily life. One has seen in the past
so many good men living for themselves alone; not knowing
the beauty and widespread influence in the Rotary Spirit. Finally,
however, Rotary came into this community, and finally into their
lives, and they began to live anew, transforming a seemingly selfish
life mto one of usefulness. Nothing is more helpful in any commu
nity than to see a group of business and professional men lending
their efforts unto a spirit of "Service."

Time was when the business man was looked upon with an
eye of suspicion. Now the Spirit of Service has gripped the busi
ness and professional men and they now stand as the leaders of any
community.
Our own club is no exception. Rotary has chosen men from
so many classifications that hidden talent, hitherto unknown, has
blossomed and bloomed into real fruitage. It is needless for me to
recount the many instances where this is a fact in our club. A
glance at any undertaking is sufficient proof to you.
It would be idealistic to predict the future life and activities of
Rotary in Coldwater, but I know Rotary, and you, and what is good
for you and what is good for Rotary will be good for our city and
community.
Let us extend Rotary to our community, our relations to our
rural brother should be cultivated and made a reality.

Service is our watchword and the community that now prospers, will be builded on “Service,” therefore, be of “Service,” for
he “profits most, who serves best.”
Yours Rotarily,

Brief History of Rotary

OTARY came into “being” with a group of four Chicago
business men, each representing a different calling. One a
coal dealer, one a mining operator, one a merchant tailor,
and the fourth an attorney.
To the attorney, Paul P. Harris, belongs the credit for the con
ception of the club which has grown from the first meeting in Chi
cago on February 23rd, 1905, until this year, on the 18th anniver
sary, it has attained the marvelous growth of over 1,325 clubs, with
a membership of over 90,000 in twenty-seven countries of the world.
It was Paul Harris’ idea the club should be unique among clubs;
that it should promote friendship and understanding, knowledge and
broad mindedness, and an interest in the other fellow and mutual
helpfulness; and that only one man from each line of business or
profession should be admitted to membership. The first meeting
was held on the evening of February 23rd, in the Unity building, on
Dearborn street. Chicago.
The name ‘‘Rotary” was chosen for the club because of the
custom of having the meeting in rotation at the places of business
of the different members, where each member acted as host and
after the luncheon exhibited his office, shop or place of business
and explained his business to the other members. As time went on
and the membership increased it was found impracticable to hold
the weekly meetings in their business places and it was not long be
fore the meetings were held in the various hotels and restaurants of
Chicago.
The growth of Rotary during the past eighteen years has been
marvelous and it is still growing by leaps and bounds. Rotary is in
a class by itself—it is unlike any other organization in the world. It
draws men together in one great bond of fellowship. It is impossi

E

ble for any one person or any one business to dominate in Rotary.
Each member is benefited by his membership, which tends to lift
him to a higher plane and out of his business rut and routine.
The Rotary creed is fully set forth in the “Rotary Platform and
in the “Rotary Code of Ethics.” Every Rotary club demands fair
dealings, honest methods and high standard in business, amplify
ing the Rotary Slogan, “Service above self—he profits most who
serves best.”
The Rotary club has one rule which must never be violated.
This is the rule in regard to attendance, whereby a member who is
absent four meetings in succession is dropped from the club. A care
ful record is kept by every club secretary and nothing short of sick
ness or death can excuse a member.

The general policy which Rotary invariably follows with re
gard to community service is that the club or any combination of
Rotary clubs does not undertake to carry through any enterprise for
the doing of which there already exists some other organization, but
lends itself, either as a club, or more often and more particularly
through its individual members, to the organization interested in the
project. Where no organization exists the Rotary Club usually
either adopts the plan of organizing an agency or during an emer
gency the Rotary Club carries on the project until some other organ
ization is formed for the purpose.

New Rotary history was created on the night of Friday, Febru
ary 23rd, the 18th anniversary, when Raymond M. Havens, inter
national president of Rotary, broadcasted his address throughout
the United States, Canada and Mexico to hundreds of clubs. Through
the co-operation of the broadcasting stations of the country who
agreed to leave the air free for this experiment and with the aid of
powerful stations in different sections, the address was heard with
great clearness wherever the atmospheric conditions permitted.

Do not be afraid of criticism.

Criticise yourself often.

Handle the hardest job first each day. Easy ones are pleasures.
Be fair and do at least one decent act each day.

Rotary Code of Ethics
Adopted by the Sixth Annual
Clubs

at

San

Convention of the
Francisco,

International Association of Rotary

California,

July

Nineteenth

to

Twenty-third, Nineteen Hundred and Fifteen.

Y BUSINESS standards shall have in them a note of sym
pathy for our common humanity. My business dealings,
ambitions and relations shall always cause me to take into
consideration my highest duties as a member of society. In every
position in business life, in every responsibility that comes before
me, my chief thought shall be to fill that responsibility and discharge
that duty so when I have ended each of them, I shall have lifted the
level of human ideals and achievements a little higher than I found
them. In view of this, it is my duty as a Rotarian—

1 st—To consider my vocation worthy, and as affording me distinct
opportunity to serve society.
2nd—To improve myself, increase my efficiency and enlarge my
service, and by so doing attest my faith in the fundamental
principle of Rotary, that he profits most who serves best.

3rd—To realize that I am a business man and ambitious to succeed;
but that I am first an ethical man, and wish no success that is
not founded on the highest justice and morality.
4th—To hold that the exchange of my goods, my service and my
ideas for profit is legitimate and ethical, provided that all
parties to the exchange are benefited thereby.
5th—To use my best endeavors to elevate the standards of the
vocation in which I am engaged, and so to conduct my affairs
s
that others in my vocation may find it wise, profitable and
conducive to happiness to emulate my example.
6th—To conduct my business in such a manner that I may give a
perfect service equal to or even better than my competitor,
and when in doubt to give added service beyond the strict
measure of debt or obligation.

7th—To understand that one of the greatest assets of a professional
or of a business man is his friends and that any advantage
gained by reason of friendship is eminently ethical and proper.

8th—To hold that true friends demand nothing of one another and
that any abuse of the confidence of friendship for profit is
foreign to the spirit of Rotary, and in violation of its Code of
Ethics.

9th—To consider no personal success legitimate or ethical which is
secured by taking unfair advantage of certain opportunities
in the social order that are absolutely denied others, nor will
I take advantage of opportunities to achieve material suc
cess that others will not take because of the questionable mor
ality involved.

! Oth—To be not more obligated to a Brother Rotarian than I am to
every other man in human society; because the genius of
Rotary is not in its competition, but in its co-operation; for
provincialism can never have a place in an institution like
Rotary, and Rotarians assert that Human Rights are not
confined to Rotary Clubs, but are as deep and as broad as the
race itself; and for these high purposes does Rotary exist to
educate all men and all institutions.
11 th—Finally, believing in the universality of the Golden Rule, “All
things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you,
do ye even so unto them,” we contend that Society best holds
together when equal opportunity is accorded all men in the
natural resources of this planet.

‘‘For the world is a mirror of king and slave;

it’s just what we are, and do.. So give to the world the BEST you have,

And the BEST will come back to you!"

The Rotary Spirit

|

By Edgar A. Guest.

Red roses for the living, and handclasps warm and true,
A heart that’s tuned to giving, and strength to dare and do;
The sound of honest laughter, the joy of honest toil;
For those that follow after, to leave a finer soil.
All this has been and ever will be the Rotary plan,
A man s sincere endeavor to serve his fellow-man.
•

!

A little less self-seeking, a little more for men,
Less bitter in our speaking, more kindly with the pen;
A little less of swerving from paths of truth and right,
A little more of serving and less of dollar might.
More peaceful with our neighbors, and stauncher to our friends,
For this all Rotary labors, on this its hope depends.

|
To smooth the way for others, to make of life the most;
To make the phrase “our brothers” mean more than idle boast:
lo praise sincere endeavor, when praise will spur it on,
Withholding kind words never until the friend is gone;
This is the Rotary spirit, this is the Rotary dream,
God grant that we mav near it, before we cross the stream

The Rotary Wheel
Rotary is symbolized by a gear wheel hav

At its center is conscience, sleepless guard of
conduct. Its Hub may represent Faith in
God and Man. Its arms stand for Hope, the
anchor of the soul. Its rim forms the un
broken circle of Love, which thinketh no evil.
And its twenty-four teeth, which, engaging in
the various activities of life, perfect its opera

INTERACT CLUB of Coldwater High School (www2.coldwaterschools.org/interact)
The Interact Club of Coldwater High School is a service club sponsored by the Coldwater Rotary Club. Since 1991, Interact has been
providing service to both C.H.S. as well as the community of Coldwater. The goals of Interact are quite simple: 1.) to promote the idea of service
to our local community, and 2) to open young people’s minds to the world in which we live. With those two goals in mind the following will give a
partial list of activities that our Club members are involved in this year.
In regards to community service, a number of our members have been helping with tutoring programs established at Max Larsen El
ementary school as well as Coldwater High School. In conjunction with the Food Pantry we organized this past year’s Christmas in Branch Coun
try food drive in the high school and this year the school contributed over 1,000 lbs. of food to go into baskets for needy families We “adopted”
four children at Christmas to make their holiday a little more special. Our organization participates in the Big Brothers/Sisters Bowl-A-Thon and
has raised money for various community agencies such as Shelterhouse and the Sheriff Department’s rescue dive team. We are an original sponsor
of the Greater Hospice Duck Race, contribute to Relay for Life as well as Branch County’s Walk for Warmth, and over 45 Interact members helped
in the construction of Kid’s Kingdom some years ago. We have two major club projects that we take on: This year we completely cleaned up and
mulched the Memorial Courtyard at C.H.S. and in the spring we Spruce Up C.H.S. for graduation. We have also made it a point to invite foreign
exchange students into our organization and this year they have played an integral part in making or organization a success. We truly enjoy having
them as members.
At C.H.S. we have given out over $19,000 in scholarships over the past 15 years to needy students, helped to purchase the new sound
system for Cardinal Field, and the “Cardinal” on center court of the gymnasium was Interacts contribution to our school. We also spruce up the
high school grounds getting C.H.S. ready for graduation. Interact members raise our money through our annual Interact Raffle, as well as provid
ing refreshments for the Rotary Show.
Interact members have one thing in common; they care about themselves and the greater community that they live in. They are very
involved in school activities and yet they find the time to give something back to our school as well as our community.
This has been a busy and exciting time for our club and we would like to thank the Coldwater Rotary Club for all there help and sup
port. It has also been a pleasure to be a part of this year’s Rotary Show. Our club would like to congratulate the Rotarians for a job well done!

FRANK BARNES FOR DIRECTOR

7

f

We announced in the last Razzberry the candidacy of Frank C.
Barnes for membership on the Board of Directors of R. I. The Manistee
Club has projected him into the field and so far as can be learned all
the clubs in the 151st District are enthusiastically for him. The world
is a big place and to win membership in a body of fifteen men chosen
from all over the map is a considerable problem.
Frank is the kind of fellow that makes friends, however. He has had
the opportunity in the last two International Assemblies to become
intimately acquainted with leading Rotarians everywhere. There is no
doubt but all of them feel friendly to him.
The politics of the situation seem to be about as follows:
The Constitution of R. I. provides that five of the fourteen direc
tors shall come from the United States, one from Canada, one from
Great Britain, and five from other parts of the world, the president
and immediate past president being on the board also and completing
the number. On the present board there is no director east of the
Mississippi River. Allen Oliver of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Dick Wells
of Pocatello, Idaho, and Reeve Vanneman of Albany, New York, are
the only men definitely committed to a candidacy for next year. Major
Griffith of Chicago who had planned to be a candidate has changed his
mind. George Averill, immediate Past District Governor of the 23rd Dis
trict, who was seriously discussed, has decided not to make the race.
This district has never had representation either on the Board or
committees of the international organization. The old 9th District and
18th District, of which this district was formerly a part, were represent
ed but that was many years ago.
Geographical considerations are given great importance in the
choice of officers and this district must be given serious consideration
when it asks for its first office. Certainly no one in the district is en
titled to greater preference than Frank Barnes. He has been doing yeo
man service in Rotary since 1930 when he was elected President of his
club and staged the District Conference in perhaps the smallest town
which has ever entertained it. He is a good organizer, a hard worker
and a splendid fellow. As District Governor last year he organized more
new clubs than has been done in the district for many years.
Every Rotarian who has a Rotary friend outside of the district
should write him a letter about Frank. We suggest that in doing so he
enclose a copy of this Razzberry. We are having an extra supply print
ed for that purpose.

----- 0-----

While we are talking of Rotary politics. The presidency of R. I.
will probably come to the United States next year. There are two candictates, George Hager of Chicago, and Allen Street of Oklahoma City.
It goes without saying that both are fine fellows' or they wouldn t be in
the race. Roy Shattuck has al somewhat personal interest in the can
didacy of Allen Street. Probably no one else in the club is particularly
interested in either candidate. If so it would, of course, be a courtesy
to Roy if the club supported his candidate.

THE RAZZBERRY
Charlie Pollock’s letter which was crowded out of the last Razzberry, states over two hundred fifty children were registered at the
clinic recently held at Sturgis. Thirteen were listed from Coldwater and
vicinity but only six attended, the others having had treatment previously. About twelve attended from Branch County, transportation being
furnished by Rotarians.
The clinic, was under general charge of Dr. D. M. Kane of Sturgis,
the specialists being Dr. Snyder of Grand Rapids, orthoepist; Dr. John
Law, U. of M., children’s diseases; Dr. William Stott, psychologist,
looking after the mentally deficient. Miss Butzer and an assistant from
the Commission, together with five nurses from the Sturgis Hospital,
cared for the patients.
We have not yet reported the November attendance standings.
Bronson was well up the list being ninth in order. Coldwater being fif
teenth it just came under the wire in the first division. its percentage
being 90.19. Quincy was not so hot. It was twenty-first with a percentage
of 86.4. Marshall was just below Coldwater with Hillsdale and Sturgis
trailing below Quincy. Lowell is still keeping up its pace, having had
thirteen consecutive one hundred per cent meetings.
District Governor Kim Sigler is to be here next Tuesday. It is to
be hoped we can give him a one hundred per cent meeting.

The meeting of the Board of Directors and heads of committees
held at the Shack last Monday night was well attended and was cer
tainly a profitable meeting. Many useful suggestions grew out of it.
The Charlotte Rotary Mirror asks of its members the same ques
tion we asked, “What dollar gift would you send to a foreign club as
typical of this town?” We hope it gets more replies than we did.
There are one or two new Rotary Clubs in the Hawaiian Islands.
A movement is on foot to secure a separate district for those islands.
There are only about five or six clubs but their di tance from the main
land is so great that they are not now well served.
There are but seven clubs in the district of Poland, for that matter.

Rotary is growing rapidly these days. The News Letter of December
17th lists twenty-eight new clubs. Formerly these lists contained from
four to ten names.

The Rotary Club of Kauai, K. I. has named its weekly publication.
“ The Spouting Horn." That is going the Razzberry one be t ter .
Recently at the Brazilian Embassy in Paris, Maurice Duperrey,
president of R. I, was decorated by the Brazilian Government with
the insignia of an officer of the Southern Cross. The conferring of this
honor is an indication of the high regard in which Rotary is held in
Brazil.

THE RAZZBERRY
YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE
The Ed has become involved in a discussion in the London (Eng.)
Rotarian. In a recent issue a member of that club contributed an ar
ticle in which he attacked the phrase, “You get out of Rotary only
what you put into it.” He called it a “mean and sorted chunk of bark
ing morality” and phrases it “deposit your pennies first and then you
will be able to draw these pennies out again.” He said:

“Surely Rotary has something more to give you than what
you yourself put in. I suggest this part of the initiation cere
mony should be revised. There is much more to Rotary, as to
any association of men, than this material little axiom of the
savings bank.”
The reply was as follows:

November 23, 1937
My dear Editor Pelley,
I have read with much interest and some disappointment
the article “My Outlook” by F. L. Billington-Greig, who signs
as “B.-G.” in your issue of November 6th. It is, as you say in
your headnote, thought-provoking but I do not) accept its thesis
as sound. Will you permit a stranger, who, as editor of a Rotary
publication exchanging with yours, is a constant reader of your
paper, to answer it?
All my life I have reposed faith in the maxim, “You get out
of a thing what you put into it.” It has been to me a constant
spur to activity. In Rotary I have worked much harder because
of the subconscious feeling that I should be rewarded by a rich
er and finer Rotary life on that account.
I am sure “B.-G.” does not mean to deprive us of this in
centive of Rotary effort. But he mistakes the meaning of the
phrase. Surely no one means by it that the effort is an exact
measure of the return. That would be absurd. The latter is so
intangible as to be incapable of measurement.
Obviously, the correct interpretation is, “You get out of Rotary in proportion to what you put into it." Even that is only
loosely accurate. Any such aphorism must be considered as the
statement of a general principle and not a mathematical rule.
The principle, however, is one of the most valuable elements
of character building. Properly understood it is not a narrow
•• penny-in-the bank” rule of thumb, as he contends, but the
antithesis of it—-a basic force inspiring men to effort where the
result cannot be foreseen nor measured.
Without it men would be inclined only to such effort as
would insure a definite and anticipated return. The great movements of history, the struggles and sacrifices which have made
England great, would have been impossible.
No man of vision would contend that life s rewaids are limit
ed in value to the effort expended. They are, as “B.-G.” says,
vastly greater. But they flow from honest effort and are increas
ed in proportion to the wisdom and intensity of it. He would

not dispute that. He is simply finding' fault with the wording of
the maxim. But if he were to define it more correct.y he would
attain accuracy at the expense of brevity and punch.
Why not leave it as it is?

Good Cheer From President Bob Hill
This paper is quite honored by a letter of good cheer from Bob Hill,
President of Rotary International.
He has been an outstanding figure in Rotary for years and the editor
became quite well acquainted with him as District Governor some years
ago. He is a man of remarkable personality and with an unusual fund
of humor. At the International Assembly in 1930 Sir Charles Mander,
who headed the British delegation said there were two figures in Rotary
of unique personality who impressed themselves on his delegation more
than anyone else. The two were Luis Machado of Havana, and Bob Hill
of Columbia City.
Following is his letter:
Dear Glenn:
Thanks for your thoughtfulness in sending me a copy of your
new club publication -The Experiment.” It’s delightfully interest
ing and shows that you are giving some real constructive and
worth while thought to its content. A good publication is a
decided asset to the club. To make such a publication a success
a lot of time, thought and effort on the part of the editor is
required. If properly edited it can serve a most beneficial purpose
in that the local newspapers may find in the material many items
worthy of reprint.
Remember me kindly to your fellows. May I take this op
portunity to extend to them all a Christmas greeting. Good oldfashioned Christmas cheer is not a myth. It is with us as never
before. If we do not find it and enjoy it to the full it is due to our
own blindness. In spite of all our modern conveniences—radio,
motor car, and what not, this is going to be an old-fashioned
Christmas for this is the spirit that makes Christmas. This
Christmas is going to be merrier than ever, and its spirit true and
earnest. Never was the world so wide for happiness, never so deep
for the current of friendliness. Never so many men of good will,
never so ardent a desire for peace on earth, never so many things
to make Christmas merry.
Sincerelv vours,
BOB HILL.

A New Department
We have been contemplating the establishment of a 61 Remember
When” department. The following article taken from the " Remember
When” items of last Wednesday’s issue of the Coldwater Reporter prompts
us to start it now.
-Dear Santa Claus: Will you please bring me a pair of
leggins and overshoes and a mouth organ and a book and
a train of cars, and don’t forget my Christmas tree with
candles on, and my little cousin Helen Loring, would like a
dollie. Please don’t forget little Kenneth Olmstead, 255
Division Street.”
We hope the members of the club will respond to this touching
appeal and will do the appropriate thing.
After this, however, we must have contributions from every member
to this column. The first contributions must come from charter mem
bers and should recall incidents of the first year of Rotary. They must
be submitted as early as the meeting of January 8th. The names of the
charter members still on the roll are as follows
George M. Branch
C. O. Carroll
Hugh W. Clarke
Albert J. Fiske
Robert A. Kerr
Harry L. Milnes
Sam Schultz
Roy Shattuck
As a starter for our new department the following is apropos.
The Coldwater Club, together with a number of other surrounding
clubs, was invited to Battle Creek to a dinner at the Post Tavern to
meet Ray Havens of Kansas City, then President of Rotary International.
That was during the Rotary year 1922-23. He gave a good speech but
the outstanding feature of the evening was the singing of Ray Havens
and his wife. They were wonderful singers and gave a fine concert.
The thing which brings it to mind at this time is the fact that Ray
Havens died suddenly December 7th of heart disease. Too bad!
----------- x---------Among the guests last week were M P. Rosenthaler and Charles J.
Loos of Detroit, the former an auditor, the latter an attorney and representative of the Alger Estate, Paul J. Rood of Michigan State College
and D. S. Davis, Jr., of the Charlotte Rotary Club.
Marty Derhammer has hardly got into the swing of securing and
reporting the names and addresses of guests as yet so we are not sure the
list is complete. Marty says he’ll double check 'em hereafter.

.——:—X-----

Carl Vinton checked in for the December 11th meeting. W. J. Carlisle,
Bob Kerr and Roy Shattuck, who were absent from the same meeting,
failed to make up their attendance.
Harry Milnes and Red McKnight were out of town last Tuesday,
but will check in, to give the club its second 100% meeting of the year.
This will make the December attendance over 95%.
.——--- x----- ----A rather unique radio program was pulled off November 15th when
the Rotary Clubs of Schenectady, New York, and Buenos Aires, Argentina,
engaged in a joint program. Among the speakers were Daniel C. Roper,
Secretary of Commerce, Paul Harris and Louis Duhau, Argentinian
Minister of Agriculture. Official greetings and songs were exchanged.
Such a program cannot but have a fine effect in promoting international
good will.

Bob Kerr’s Suggestion
Have you noticed the discussion in the Rotarian regarding the
"More Young Blood” question in Rotary? Several proposals have been
made since the inauguration of the discussion at the Detroit "Convention
last summer, one being Senior Membership for Rotarians who elect
to relinquish active membership at the end of ten years and making
Senior Membership compulsory after twenty years in Rotary. The pur
pose, of course, being to make available to younger men coming on in
each community, the classifications held by the older members, which
otherwise might possibly exclude from Rotary many desirable prospects.
This question is being given very earnest consideration by the Board of
Directors of Rotary International and is due to be presented again before
the convention at Mexico City this coming year.
Many worth while arguments have been presented on both sides of
the question and undoubtedly in a good many clubs some action along
this line would be beneficial in promoting and instilling new interest
in their club activities. The writer however would dislike very much to
see the above proposal enacted by Rotary International as he would fear
that many of the old timers might lose considerable of their interest in
Rotary activities with a consequent loss to Rotary as a whole.
Our club, we think, has handled the question of Classifications in the
proper manner. We are of the ovinion however that a number of very
fine prospective Rotarians are still available in Coldwater and we would
urge our Membership committee to consider this question of “More Young
Blood” or “New Blood” for this club. We devote more or less effort to the
increasing of our attendance record, couldn’t we also devote some effort to
increasing our membership?

Bill Cook, long time secretary of the Hastings Club, himself one of the
main reasons for the pre-eminence of that club in all branches of Rotary
activity, writes in very complimentary terms of our paper and at our
request sends a copy of his minutes of one of the meetings of the Hastings
Club. Bill is a newspaper man and his minutes are models of excellence.
In fact, the Hastings Club plans to have them bound in book form.
Hugh Clarke started the practice of reading at each meeting the
minutes of the last meeting but Hutch joshed him about it a little and he
emit. The minutes were fine and should be resumed. Hugh must expect to
stand the gaff. No one who takes an active part in Rotary can be thin
skinned.
- ----------x— ---- —Dr. Howard, Medical Superintendent of the American Legion Hospital
at Battle Creek, gave an instructive talk last week on tuberculosis. We all
know better how to avoid the danger of this dread disease as a result.
George Dorman, who brought him to us, is again entitled to the
thanks of the club.
