The relationship began Aug. 7, 1958, after the club had used the Arlington Motel for several years. Then, there were 81 club members and now just one current member was in the club that day. In honor of his tireless efforts to form this new Rotary club Frank Rowe became the first President. The club‘s Charter 1044 was presented to the members on January 5, 1922 by District Governor George Barnes. On January 17, 1922 Herbert Sebald became the club's 23rd member. His son Craig has been a member for 61 years. In the 100 years the club has met in three locations. It began at St. Marks Parish Hall, then to the place of the beginning, Arlington Hotel, then the Elks Lodge. Its relationship with the Elks has lasted 63 years since the first meeting there on August 12, 1958. In 1937 our club supported the newly formed clubs in Quincy and Bronson. These new clubs made a very convenient place to make-up. In 1986 our club sponsored the newly formed Coldwater Sunrise Club. The Sunrise Club received its Charter on October 28, 1986 when all the Branch County Rotary Clubs met for the evening event. Robert Seaman was the first president of Sunrise. we ye Ve To name just a few of the untold numbers that the Coldwater club can be proud of in helping the community would include holding the 1994 District 6360 Annual Conference. In 1986 the club established the Coldwater Rotary Foundation and its objectives were to make the community a better place to live, work, and play. The club participates in Rotary International Humanitarian projects, Polio Plus and Clean Water. In the interest of promoting Rotary further in May 1991 the Interact Club of Coldwater High School was established sponsored by our club. Their members attend as guests at weekly club meetings during the school year. Interact members support the community throughout the year with fund raising activities. During the club’s 100 years of support the community nothing can rival the annual fund raising Rotary Show. The 2022 show will be its 66th. The first show was held in 1935 and profits were used to aid the Crippled Children’s Fund. Since 1991, Interact has been providing service to both C.HLS. as well as the community of Coldwater. The goals of Interact are quite simple: 1.) to promote the idea of service to our local community, and 2) to open young people’s minds to the world in which we live. With those two goals in mind the following will give a partial list of activities that our Club members are involved in this year. We have also made it a point to invite foreign exchange students into our organization and this year they have played an integral part in making or organization a success. We truly enjoy having them as members. After this year, we will have given out over $25,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years to needy students at C.H.S as well as helping raise money for our local Veterans organization to aid in the buying of a new handicapped accessible van. Interact members raise money through our annual Interact Raffle, as well as providing refreshments for the Rotary Show. Interact members have one thing in common; they care about themselves and the greater community that they live in. They are very involved in school activities and yet they find the time to give something back to our school as well as our community. This year is an exciting year for us. Thanks to a wonderful donation by the Women who Care of Branch County we are inaugurating a fun event for all students in Branch County called the ABC Challenge. The ABC Challenge (Awesome Branch County) is an obstacle course/mud run to be held at the Branch County Fairgrounds will continue in 2022. The Branch County Rotary Clubs (Coldwater, Sunrise, Bronson, and Quincy) have agreed to be our title sponsor with the Coldwater Noon Rotary Club sponsoring all the events taking place in the Amphitheater at the Fairgrounds. This will be a great fund raiser for our organization and we will be giving back thousands of dollars to local schools as well as other needy organizations in Branch County with the proceeds we raise from our event. When living in South Bend he had been the guest of his manager at several Rotary meetings and became interested in Rotary. Frank learned no Rotary Club existed in Coldwater, and he quietly set about the possibility of organizing a club. By summer he felt pretty sure Coldwater would support a Rotary club and he set about canvassing businessmen who could support his effort. On October 6, 1921, Frank received the word from Rotary’s headquarters to proceed on the work of organizing a Rotary club. Quickly he found men willing to join Rory. The preparations were complete and on Thursday evening, November 10, 1921, it all began for the Coldwater Rotary Club. The twenty-two Charter members who met at the Arlington Hotel in downtown Coldwater did not realize it was the beginning of Rotary in Coldwater which now spans 96 years. The sponsoring Hillsdale club sent a large number of its members. In honor of his tireless efforts to form this new Rotary club Frank Rowe became the first President. The club’s Charter 1044 was presented to the members on January 5, 1922 by District Governor George Barnes. On January 17, 1922 Herbert Sebald became the club’s 23rd member. His son Craig has been a member for 61 years. In the 100 years the club has met in three locations. It began at St. Marks Parish Hall, then to the place of the beginning, Arlington Hotel, then the Elks Lodge. Its relationship with the Elks has lasted 63 years since the first meeting there on August 12, 1958. In 1937 our club supported the newly formed clubs in Quincy and Bronson. These new clubs made a very convenient place to make-up. In 1986 our club sponsored the newly formed Coldwater Sunrise Club. The Sunrise Club received its Charter on October 28, 1986 when all the Branch County Rotary Clubs met for the evening event. Robert Seaman was the first president of Sunrise. To name just a few of the untold numbers that the Coldwater club can be proud of in helping the community would include holding the 1994 District 6360 Annual Conference. In 1986 the club established the Coldwater Rotary Foundation and its objectives were to make the community a better place to live, work, and play. The club participates in Rotary International Humanitarian projects, Polio Plus and Clean Water. In the interest of promoting Rotary further in May 1991 the Interact Club of Coldwater High School was established sponsored by our club. Their members attend as guests at weekly club meetings during the school year. Interact members support the community throughout the year with fund raising activities. During the club’s 100+ years of support the community nothing can rival the annual fund raising Rotary Show. The 2024 show will be its 68th. The first show was held in 1935 and profits were used to aid the Crippled Children’s Fund. In 1937 the next show was held for the purpose of funding high school band uniforms. It is not clear why, but not until 1956 was another show presented. This was the beginning of shows every year except 1960 and 1969. In 1969 the club sponsored the Wayne King band for two Saturday night performances. Both the 1 and 9 PM performances were sell-outs. �Coldwater Rotary/Coldwater Noon Club History as told by Craig Sebald Sixty-four of the shows have been held in the historic Tibbits Opera House in downtown Coldwater. Show directors come from within the club’s membership. Our club asks potential recipients from profits to submit written requests explaining the need for funding. The Board of Directors has the task of selecting the most deserving. Some of the funding requests are for less than a thousand dollars, more often larger amounts. Major past recipients are Rotary Park, High School scoreboard, Dearth Community Center, Sheltered Women’s Home, Little League diamonds, and youth soccer fields. Recent projects include Tibbits Opera House, Branch County Food Pantry, Coldwater Tennis Courts, and the Rotary Splash Park. For many years our International Project has been the support of the Haiti Nursing Foundation. The Coldwater Noon Foundation was restarted in 2018 (as the Coldwater Rotary Foundation) when the board of directors of the Foundation was re-established. A small $40.000 fund which was held at the Community Foundation was the seed money for the revitalized foundation. In 2023, due to a capital campaign and matching funds by Dr. David Rubley, the fund was over $190,000 at the end of 2023. The club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on December 1, 1971. Officers of other Branch County Rotary clubs were invited to join Coldwater Rotarians and wives. The evening of Tuesday, December 3, 1996 we celebrated our 75th Anniversary. Again, the county Rotary clubs were asked to attend. The 100 th Anniversary was held as a community wide event in Downtown Coldwater with live music, a few skits, food trucks, and past shows on the screen at Tibbits. In June of 2022, the difficult decision was made to part ways from Rotary International and re-brand the Club as the Coldwater Noon Club. In doing so, over $10,000 in district and international dues are able to be kept in the Coldwater Community annually. The Coldwater Noon Club members follow the 3 Cs: Character / Community / Camaraderie. Little did a group of service-minded businessmen in the fall of 1921 know their club would become a service-minded force in Coldwater as the city grew. As told by Craig M. Many changes have occurred during this period of time, but one fact remainsthe four avenues of service have been the same, or improved upon. The organizational meeting of the Coldwater Rotdry Club was held on November'18,.|921, at St. Mark's Parish House, with a large attendance of visiting Rotarians. At the date of his death he had perfect attendance for a period of 59 years. There have been five secretaries to date-Hugh Clark-Chick Kennedy-George Pierce, Ernest Luse and Robert Rumsey. Glen Cowell joined the club January 24, 1922 and is the only member from' the Co1dwater Rotary Club to be District Governor. This cl.ub, known as the Interact Club, has a twofold purpose: 1) to promote the ldea of service to the community, and 2l to open young peoplers minds to the world in which we llve. t{ith those two goals in mind the following will give a partial list of activities that our Club members are involved in. In regards to community service we are partlcipating in the Staters Adopt-A-Highway Program, cleaning up a section of I-69. A group of our students has been involved ln a tutoring program at Edison School each Tuesday and Thursday, and other mernbers have been involved with the English as a Second tanguage Program offered through Franklin Adult Education. tle organized this yearrs Christmas in Coldwater food drive in the High School and doubled the amount of food received from the prevlous year. Our organization has helped wlth the Big Bros./Sisters Bowl-A-Thon and also Later on this helped the local Hospice program with various activities. year we hope to donate money that we are raising to various community organizations as weLl aE establishing eome type of scholarshlp program for our members who are in need of the financial he1p. As to the International component that we participate in, one slgnificant thing the club declded to do at the beginning of this school year vras to invite each forelgn exchange student to be a part of our group. This has given these students activities to be involved in as well as nevt students to neet and befrlend. As a way to better understand the world in which we live our club members will be partlcipating in a Hode1 United Nations held at Hope ColLege ln March. We have had the opportunity: to observe its workings and to measure its usefulness. We realize-more vividly than- we did a year ago the intelligence with which this fine’philanthrophy’ is planned, the generosity with which it is financed, and the executive ability with which it is managed. There is always danger that such an institution will be taken Zor granted: that’a community will fail to appreciate its benefactors. We cannot afford to make that mistake—not because of its effect on the benefactor but because of its influence on ourselves. Gratitude is classed among the unpleasant emotions. But in the building of character, either in an individual or a community, proper appreciation of favors cannot be overlooked. Although the Rotary club doesnot represent the community officially yet as it originated the idea of the Branch County Health Unit and prompted the organization which secured it, we probably would not be assuming too much to express the gratitude of the City of Coldwater and the-whole County of Branch to Mr. W. L. Hall recently issued ‘sixteen book'tets on the various professions written by club members and published by the club as a contribution to the Phillippine Vocaticnal Guidance Association.. These booklets have been placed .in the libraries of 400 high sehcols and colleges in the Islands and are now being used in twenty-four ..different ways. The cost of the booklets was reduced by using type. which had already been set up in the Journal of Education in. which the text first appeared. The Philippine Free Press, the largest weekly. magazine in the Philippine Islands secured the privilege of reprinting all of the booklets on its students page. As a result of three years’ efforts by Ro- tarian Hall the Government of the Commonwealth will make vocational guidance an integral part of the new educational system. The London~ Rotarian: has* been running a series of articles by its members entitled “My Hobby”. The following is worthy of. reprint. Since the Hobby series has been started I have asked myself, “What is my hobby?” Consciously, I do not think I have one, as I am interested in so many. aspects-of life. Sub-consciously, I think it is “keeping youthful,” mentally, rather than physically. Generally I take the attitude of youth (at any rate, my youth as far as I can remember it) as keing trat of rebellion. Why, I ask myself, should anyone be dammed eternally? Why. should there be extremes cf poverty and-riches? Why should most people always be living in fear? ‘Why shou'd pleasant. leisure be so sparsely spread? I believe, that these conditions can and mvst ke a‘tered. I have seen some progress during my life, though !ittle enough. ‘Another aspect ‘of youth is (or rather was) not to be bored but to enjoy the simple things of life and simple people. Youth can also adapt itself to varying environments, and I still try to do. this. On the other hand. youth thinks it knows everything, and there I fail to. carry out my. sub-conscious hobby. . Politically, economically, and socially I am. still.a rebel, I am glad to say, but now I lack some of the courage of youth in proclaiming the fact and pursuing. rebellious rims.
